For decades, there was one absolute, golden rule of car ownership that every driver knew by heart: change your oil every three thousand miles or three months, whichever came first. It was drilled into us by our parents, broadcasted in television commercials, and reinforced by that little clear reminder sticker stuck to the top left corner of your windshield.
